Dabai Fruit is scientifically called as “ Canarium odontophyllum ”.

ORIGIN OF DABAI FRUIT
Canarium odontophyllum is a fruit-bearing tree of the genus Canarium in the family Burseraceae. It is a native of Borneo, where it is locally known as Dabai in Sarawak and kembayau in Sabah and Brunei.

OTHER NAMES OF DABAI FRUIT
Dabai is commonly known as ‘ Sarawak olive ’, ‘ Sibu olive ’ .

APPEARANCE OF DABAI FRUIT
The fruit outer skin is glossy black colour while the flesh is yellow with an elongated seed. Being in the same genus as the Pili nut (Canarium ovatum) the seeds are also edible, and similar to almonds or pistachios.

TASTES OF DABAI FRUIT
When eaten raw, Dabai is very astringent; when soaked, it tastes like Avocado.

Dabai varieties are such as Song, Kapit, Intermediate, Egg Yolk, Tarat, Red Dabai, and Pulau Keladi.

NUTRITIONAL CONTENTS OF DABAI FRUIT
The Dabai pulp makes up about 54-60% of the Dabai fruit by weight and contains 41.3% of moisture. When fresh, 100g of the pulp contains: 3.8g protein, 26.2g fat, 4.3g crude fibre, 2.3g ash, 22.1g carbohydrates, and 339 kcal of energy.
