Jocote fruit is scientifically called as “ Spondias purpura ”.

ORIGIN OF JOCOTE FRUIT
Spondias purpura is a species of flowering plant in the cashew family, Anacardiaceae, that is native to tropical regions of the Americas, from Mexico to Brazil.

APPEARANCE OF JOCOTE FRUIT
Jocote fruit grow on deciduous trees in warm tropical climates.
They begin to develop following tiny red flowers, before any leaves appear on the tree.
Some have a knob on the end, or are oddly shaped.
The thin skin has a waxy appearance and is edible.
The flavour of a Jocote fruit is said to be similar to a plum,00. sweet with a bit of an acidic aftertaste.

When they are ripe, they are creamy and taste like a cross between a plum and a mango with a spot of Granny Apple to it.

The yellow form (uncommon) has been identified by some botanists as S. purpurea forma lutea F. & R., or even as a separate species, S. cirouella Tassac. It has been confused with the true yellow mombin, S. mombin L. (syn. S. lutea L.), q.v.
